Just over a year has passed since I came to Fukushima. I feel truly blessed to have had so many wonderful experiences, made so many new friends and am enjoying living in this lovely land.
I understand why people may feel apprehensive about visiting Fukushima. ‘Is it safe to live in Fukushima?’; ‘is the food safe to eat?’ The people living have been facing the same fears themselves.
Fukushima has been through a lot, but I think one thing that hurts the people of Fukushima the most is this stigma associated with it. Just at the mention of the name ‘Fukushima’ people will grimace and take a step back. Before you do the same I urge you to do the research for yourself. If you do so, I think you’ll realize that Fukushima is safe. In locations where people are still living background radiation is at levels similar to what you would see in over locations around the world, including China, and New York. The food in Fukushima is tested to ensure that only products ensured to be safe are distributed on the market.
I think deciding to avoid Fukushima due to the reasons above is a wasted opportunity. If you just give Fukushima a chance, I promise you that you will find something here for you. Whether it be the beautiful scenery, the rich history, or the delicious food. What particularly stands out in my mind is the character of the people here. When I came here I was given a warm welcome. Everyone is working together positively, and putting all their effort into the revitalization. I have the utmost respect for the people here.
Fukushima is a wonderful place that I am proud to call my home. I can see myself living here for the foreseeable future, and if I ever do wind up leaving, Fukushima will always hold a special place in my heart.
