Fukushima Program
Thursday, 29 May, 2008To begin with, the winners visited the Hideyo Noguchi Memorial Hall. The elementary school students in Inawashiro Town greeted them cheerfully while singing the ‘Song of Dr. Noguchi’.

Then, they moved to ‘Konjyaku-tei’ in Higashiyama hot springs and participated in the welcome reception. The winners deepened friendship with Fukushima officials over dinner, which included Fukushima Brand Japanese Sake and food made from locally grown ingredients, such as Fukushima beef. The live performance of the Koto player, Ms. Chiaki Endo, who is from Fukushima City and received the Agency for Cultural Award Arts Festival Award (Best New Artist), enlivened the reception.

The next day in the morning, they made commemorative lectures and joined discussions at the University of Aizu. At the beginning of the lecture, the governor awarded prize winners a certificate of an ‘Honorary Goodwill Ambassador of Fukushima’, hoping that they will play a role to promote long-lasting friendship between their countries and Fukushima. At the end of the lectures, both prize winners, many people, including the governor, the chairperson of the Prefectural Assembly and the mayor of Aizu Wakamatsu City performed an African dance on the stage, and the commemorative lectures reached the moving finale.

They had lunch at the restaurant and inn, ‘Tagoto’ and enjoyed the local dishes sitting around a hearth.

They participated in the ‘Meeting for Honoring Dr. Hideyo Noguchi’ and offered a flower to the bronze statue of Dr. Noguchi in front of the elementary school and junior high school students in Aizu Wakamatsu City. They seemed highly touched by the students’ essays honoring Dr. Noguchi.

At the final destination of the trip, they visited ‘Tsuruga Castle’, a symbol of Fukushima and savored Japanese culture by tasting powdered green tea, etc.

Both prize winners appeared highly moved by the warm hospitality of the residents of Fukushima. The children and local residents, who communicated with the winners, will never forget the day they shared time together.
